Hi Guys! I am back with a new blog post titled “Role of Ping in Online Gaming”. I am an avid fan of Online multiplayer games like Counter strike, Team Fortress 2 etc. For better/smoother playing experience, ping is very important. The lower the ping, the smoother is the gameplay.
What is Ping ?
In multiplayer online video games, ping refers to the network latency between a player’s computer (client) and the game server.
How online gaming works ?
Playing online involves a continuous communication between your PC and the server. If I am playing a game online then the server will continuously send me the position of every player at a particular moment and my PC sends back to the server my position.(X,Y,Z Co-ordinates etc.)
Here an Example:-
Lets take an example of a game in which there are several rooms, halls etc. Suppose that a player Sachin is moving out from a room X.
– Sachin’s PC informs JFT server that he has left the room and is currently in the hall.
– JFT server informs other players’ PCs that Sachin is not in the room anymore, he is in the hall.
These information needs to be communicated quickly. If we have a high ping because we are downloading something, or because we are playing on a server whose location is quite far from our location and we don’t get the timely information and mistakenly see that Sachin is still inside the room. You shoot him with your gun but you don’t kill him because he isn’t there any more.
Bad ping is due to many factors like poor ISP service, number of hops a packet has to travel to reach server is higher, wireless communication etc. Usually a ping higher than 150-200 is considered a bad ping.
The effects of a bad ping is worst when we use precise weapons, while with high damage(spread) weapons (like grenade or bazooka used in games) it is less affecting.
Other factors that might affect ping include: Internet connection speed, the quality of a user’s Internet service provider and the configuration of firewalls. Ping is also affected by geographical location.
If you want a better ping play in servers close to your location, change type of Internet connection or choose a better provider.
That was all!
